Eugene Victor Debs on intelligent discontent

While reading the news that our local City Council would not allow a question and answer forum to be included in citizens comments I was reminded of the importance of the words of Eugene V. Debs who of course was a key figure in early American Union formation. Though my personal view of unionization and Debs later socialist leanings are much to lengthy for this blog I do appreciate the spirit of this famous quote and believe them worthy of being called “words of freedom”:

“If it had not been for the discontent of a few fellows who had not been satisfied with their conditions, you would still be living in caves. Intelligent discontent is the mainspring of civilization. Progress is born of agitation. It is agitation or stagnation.” – Eugene Victor Debs
